In comparison the episode focuses on two men who have used their brilliance and cunning to excel in the current world. We see them fighting against their own understanding of truth that the world has defined while trying to grasp the simple truth of the Kingdom of Heaven.  Throughout the four gospels Jesus shares the good new of the Kingdom Heaven in many forms. He teaches in stories to create a connection. … In my opinion, he likely presented many different stories because not all people process information the same way. We don’t all hear take the same truth from a single story. …  Though it isn’t stated in the Gospels that Nicodemus was invited to follow him as they show in the film, it isn’t unlikely that it could have happened, so if you have some “beef” with it, consider… that not all the miracles or acts performed by Jesus were documented.  Finally, the show ends with Jesus asking Matthew to follow him and Matthew drops everything he is doing to follow,… everything.  I’ll end on the following… For every action there is a reaction. Whether it is positive or negative.  Matthew 7:7-8 7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Are you seeking? Have you stopped seeking once you found Him? Do you persist to know Him more? Bible Stories Referenced Numbers 21 John 3 Matthew 7:7

[No longer available] Other Questions and Thoughts Discussion by Scene Pawn Broker and the Leper The pawn broker states to the man that walked in after the woman, no knowing he was a leper, he states, “Just because I run a charity doesn’t mean I have to buy rocks from every old lady.” While this scene is not written in the word and a pawn shop (pawn broking) would likely not have existed in this scene. The narrative effectively portrays how people would have felt about leprosy back in the day. A disease that was untreatable. The links I have provided should always be fact checked. I do wonder if the broker was not Jewish but possible meant to represented as another culture. When he learn that the man is a leper he says, “Hades and Styx” which could be construed as believing in the Roman or Greek culture and gods. And yet, the broker states that the leper is forbidden to be within four cubits of another. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_pawnbroking https://www.cdc.gov/leprosy/index.html https://www.sefaria.org/texts – Jewish Texts Matthew and Gaius… Standing next to the Tax collector booth a chest of money, jewels, gold, etc. Meant to pay off Simon and his brother’s debt. Gaius’ retort to Matthew to act like a normal person under normal circumstances appears to clearly point out that Matthew is a bit different than most, almost like he might have high-functioning autism. It also shows that Gaius is clearly bothered by the fact that he is oddly alone in the middle of a people that despise Romans and would prefer all of Rome to fall.   Nicodemus standing amongst his peers… The Pharisees, Sadducees, and the Sanhedrin, including Shmuel. He discuss his interview with John the Baptist. Nicodemus states that he does not believe John to be a threat to the people of Israel. He then calls out Shmuel in front of the Sanhedrin for validating John’s ministry through his arrest. Shmuel’s character is interesting. In the series we see a young pharisee eager to learn and confident in his understanding of Torah and the Laws. Shmuel’s responds to Nicodemus’ rebuke by declaring that John has committed sins by calling the teacher’s of Israel a brood of vipers. He then states that the Law of Moses says, “that you shall not hate your brother within your heart.” Shmuel appears to be stating that John hates his brother’s. But by Shmuel’s actions which imprisoned John, he has committed hypocrisy but he does not appear to see it. It is good to have passion for what is good but is easy to allow the passion within to guide us before we seek God thinking that this passion that has brought us an elevated sense of justice must be good. “No one is good but God!”   The disciples are trying to set up tents. The initial discussion of why Jesus chose them as his disciples has them constantly asking why. Another thought might be why would people who were in a trade suddenly follow a homeless man who performs miracles. God doesn’t ask us to follow him blindly. So a better question is, culturally, would this change how a person responds to following, dropping all they have, to follow a homeless teacher who was declared the “Lamb who takes away the sins of man” and is healing people. Would you be able to, truthfully, drop everything you are doing to following a traveling teacher without hesitation? Culturally, we must remember that after the age of 10, if a (male) student showed promise of intellect and possibly understanding in Torah in his village/town he had a high chance of being offered an apprenticeship with a Rabbi. This position was highly coveted within the culture of Israel. If you were (a male) that was not chosen by a Rabbi early on…you would continue to apprentice under your father or a close family member. Matthew talking with Quintus about Simon’s Miracle Catch This scene is mildly humorous as Matthew attempts to explain to Quintus the miracle. While Quintus thinks Matthew was taken for a ruse/tricked. When something miraculous happens, those that see it will stand in awe while those that have heard of it might attempt to rationalize and frame the retelling as a misinterpretation. This scene is excellent. If we are to reflect, it could be taken as the difference between believing and receiving the

This can range from something physical to an idea or thought.   The episode starts off with a scene we get from — Luke 2:41-52 A young Jesus at the age of 12 is in the temple listening to the temple teachers and answering questions. Both in “The Chosen” series and in Luke, when he is found in the temple by his parents he states, “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” In the series both his parents look at each other with understanding of what he means. However, in Luke, it is written that they did not understand these things, but his mother treasured all these things in her heart. We have to remember that Luke is taking in the account of those who were with Jesus at this time. Meaning, Luke likely interviewed Jesus’ mother (eema) Mary. Luke was not part of the 12 disciples but there is a good chance he was one of the 500 (Corinthians 15) who saw Jesus the Christ/Messiah after the resurrection.  Jesus’ response this early also clearly informs the reader that he was aware of who he was and what his purpose was. Nicodemus and John in jail The dynamic between these two is an excellent contrast. It is not written in the word that Nicodemus comes and visits John in jail to enquire about miracles, but as with time, we learn that Nicodemus helps with Jesus’ burial process after his crucification.  https://www.biblegateway.com/resources/ivp-nt/Joseph-Nicodemus-Bury-Jesus-Body The series uses this discourse to show that not all Pharisees and those of Sanhedrin opposed coming messiah. “The Chosen” does an excellent comparison between the world and Jesus as the coming king. Matthew, Mark, and Luke paraphrases Isaiah 40:3. John quotes this first to Nicodemus to show how the current world treated Cesar as king and in the same way how Jesus will be treated. John the Baptist continues with quoting Proverbs 30:4, the Sayings of Agur — https://www.gotquestions.org/Agur-Proverbs.html Nicodemus’ response is that God has no son except Israel, not Jacob but the people of Jacob/Israel. Why is this stated here? Is this his first sign? If so, that would conflict with Mary of Magdalene being healed first in the series. Remember, it is important that we do not become too systematic or legalistic with the signs. If the order of the signs excluding the resurrection bother’s you, ask yourself why? What are you bothered by? Is frustration from God or yourself? In the series, the interaction between Jesus and his mother (eema) shows us a human response of considering what the act will do. Like it is an acknowledgement of a point where he chooses to act in the public eye.  In John 2:11 is states, “What Jesus did here in Canva of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. – Again with splitting hairs… “The Chosen” series likely has Jesus perform Mary’s miracle first to build her character and to show that he, Jesus, travelled with women. That he wasn’t limited to confines of the current culture or man’s way of reducing female humans. But rather, we are brother’s and sisters in a family. What is significant about transforming water to wine? Why use ceremonial water? Read: https://learn.gcs.edu/mod/book/view.php?id=5605&chapterid=328  – Ceremonial water turned into wine. One argument is, this symbolized a transformation in (not of) Judaism, even the fulfillment of ceremonial washings. Imagine wha would happened if guests wanted to wash their hands again — They would have to go to the water pots and find everyone of them filled with wine! There would be no water for their ritual. The spiritual  cleansing of Jesus’ blood superseded ritual washings. Jesus

[No longer available] Other Questions and Thoughts Often those of us with knowledge in a subject will reference a short segment from a topic, writing, or media because we have confidence in our understanding of the original content. However, if someone does not have the understanding of the original context, the segment can take on an entirely different meaning or idea. As with all the Study Guide’s points, rather than taking small sections out the written word and doing a comparison; read the entire chapter so that you have context.   Are you familiar with the term covenant? Are you aware that a covenant is not just an agreement but a blood agreement? Meaning, if you broke the covenant the other party would be in their agreed upon right to take your life and all those who fall under you.  It’s truly amazing that the God of Abram, Isaac, and Jacob (Israel) followed through with (his) side of the agreement even though (hu)man failed on their end.  After watching the episode, take a look at the RoundTable discussion for this episode.  After the scene with Simon, we see Quintus and Matthew. Quintus says, “You’re such a miserable lot. You worship one God, and yet, you’re all divided. You see, people complain we Romans run the world, but I know a dirty secret. You people want to be ruled. You want a an excuse to complain. It’s part of your nature.” Read 1 Samual 8: The people ask for a man to be appointed a King and rule over them. What does this say about man? Do ever wish someone would take lead, tell you how to live, and manage your life for you?   Read Deuteronomy 17:14-20 I wonder if the section from Deuteronomy was written before or after 1 Samuel. It reads like it would be after because it states that it is obvious or common to do.

The Chosen S1 E3 – Jesus loves the little children

People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.
